What
is ADSL?
ADSL
(which stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is
a technology which allows phone calls and Internet access
to exist on the same physical phone line at the same time.
Unlike a traditional modem which has to place a phone call
to an Internet provider, with ADSL your computer is permanently
connected to the Internet whilst your telephones can still
make and receive calls!
What
can I do with it?
A
simple answer to this would be: Anything you already
do with your 56k connection just much faster. However,
you can do things that wouldn't be viable on a dialup
connection:
* Play
games with much lower latency.
|
*
Multitask - download a file, browse the web, chat with
friends and check email at the same time - all still much
quicker than using a dial up connection.
|
*
Streaming media - You can now watch high quality streaming
media on your PC such as music videos, movie trailers,
concerts and much much more!
|
How Fast is it?
ADSL
speeds are approximately 5 to 30 times faster than normal
56K dialup modem speeds. As a comparison, downloading a
1MB file will take 31 seconds on a 256/64 ADSL connection,
whereas the same file will take 3 minutes to download using
a 56K connection.

Do
I need additional Hardware?
Yes.
You will need a ADSL modem to be able to handle the increased connection
speed. You can purchase one from your local computer store, however,
we recommend purchasing from us because we can not only offer a
significant discount with your new connection, but more importantly,
great technical support on a product we know inside out.
